Dawn along the Columbia

coming awake in grey light
train window
cool glass and outside
smukashin yellow seeds
light apple trees bloom
pale in a troche of fertile river
soil sage and rabbit brush
grey contours lift light

shift in my seat
quiet half sleep of people
amongst strangers
moon three-quarter wane
slides over high river
walls into southern
sky lichen on basalt glimmers
green life under moon
rock cut through
which train slides me out of night
under the risen day
