Adore this. Reminds me a bit of of that painting by Edith Rimmington but the freedom of the woman’s body changes it, updates it in a sense.

The artist is Vinz Feel Free.

Hot Air Balloons, Cappadocia Photograph by Kani Polat, My Shot

Found this when I was browsing images. It’s the “Best of” September photo at National Geographic. There’s something hobbitish in the feel of the photo don’t you think? It makes me experience the world as if it were not in fact mine. Nice.

One of the places I went to was the “war memorial” that was built by Sam Hill on the north bank of the Columbia River near the town (named for his daughter) Maryhill, Washington. It is a full-scale replica of the Wiltshire site but orientated rather differently. When one stands looking over the altar stone, one faces west. Through the outer ring, one a clear day, Mount Hood is square center. I suppose for a monument meant to make the comment that we still worship the god of war and honour those men sacrificed for such an idea, it makes sense to face the setting sun.

It is a beautiful view even on overcast days such as this was. Here facing the south bank of the Columbia.

There is this potential in street art, to add something to an ongoing, if a bit venal, cultural conversation. It’s as if the Athenian woman on the toilet door draws the tags together, makes them syllables in some word just there on the edge of meaning.

I went out to Ambleside Beach today and walked. Here’s a bit of what I saw.

This is one of my cats. She loves sleeping on books. The one she’s sitting so neatly on is Aristotle’s Poetics.

Her name is Sweetheart. She used to be a feral cat. I enticed into my household over the course of a year. She’s by far the lightest cat I live with and the most gentle as well as the most skittish. But she loves living indoors now – and sleeping on my desk.

I went to the doctor today to get a few more stiches removed. There is still some infection in the wound but it has markedly improved so things are moving (if slowly) in the right direction. Maybe by next week I’ll be finished with antibiotics and all the stitches will be gone.

But what I really wanted to tell you is that after the doctor, a friend and I went to a local nature center. It is based around a bog environment and so the plants that grow there are the kind that like acidic soil and water. It was a lovely little walk (can’t go that far yet.) Here’s just a few pictures.
